LAS VEGAS -- A proposed trade sending Jake Peavy to the Cubs, facilitated by a third and possibly a fourth team, isn't imminent, a Padres source indicated on Tuesday.
There has been some reluctance on the Cubs' part, whether it be an ownership issue or that they're looking to add a left-handed bat before turning attention to possibly adding Peavy.
Now there appears to be another caveat: the hesitation the Cubs might be facing from other clubs in taking on pitcher Jason Marquis and his $9.875 million salary. A Padres source said on Tuesday that San Diego wouldn't likely add Marquis in a deal.
On Monday, Padres general manager Kevin Towers said he was hopeful that a trade of Peavy to the Cubs could be done by the end of the Winter Meetings on Thursday and that he had essentially worked out the compensation package in return from Chicago as well as the third and fourth teams, believed to be the Phillies and Orioles.
The Padres are seeking a package of Major League-ready talent, namely pitchers, in any deal for Peavy, who will make $11 million next season and is owed $63 million over the final four years of his contract.
Those pitchers, presumably, would come from the Cubs, Phillies and Orioles. The Padres have been linked to Baltimore left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson and they may have some interest in a handful of young Chicago and Philadelphia pitchers.
