Yankees general manager Brian Cashman joked on Thursday that he hoped to be asleep when the free agent signing period officially began at midnight Friday. Yet when Cashman woke up on Friday morning, he did so with an agenda.

The Yankees spent Friday preparing to offer CC Sabathia a contract that would trump the six-year, $137.5 million deal the Mets gave Johan Santana last winter, according to a report on SI.com, and also readied offers for top free agents Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett. An ESPN.com report pegged the offer to Sabathia in the $140-142 million range, signaling the Yankees' intent to lure him to New York simply by outspending every other team.

Yet don't count out the Mets, one of the few teams capable of shelling out similar sums of cash. A report in the Daily News on Friday morning insisted that the Mets "wouldn't deny" interest in Sabathia, despite indications over the past two months that they're more likely to pursue cheaper targets. All that's clear one day into the signing period is that the winter is young, and Sabathia isn't likely to sign with any team for some time.
