PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies added to their Spring Training stable of pitchers on Wednesday, claiming left-hander Shane Youman off waivers from Pittsburgh.
Youman, 28, split 2006 between Pittsburgh and Triple-A Indianapolis. With the Pirates, he went 3-5 with a 5.97 ERA in 16 games (eight starts). In 10 career relief appearances, he is 1-0 with a 3.54 ERA. He will compete for a spot as the second lefty out of the bullpen, after J.C. Romero.
He could also serve as insurance should a starter go down with an injury.
Youman went 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA in 15 starts for Indianapolis. He was a 43rd-round pick by the Pirates in the 2001 draft. The Phillies now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
