Yanks' catcher to consider season-ending shoulder surgery
NEW YORK -- Unwilling to allow their catcher to play through pain any longer, the Yankees placed Jorge Posada on the disabled list Monday. Posada will have an MRI on his right shoulder Tuesday, and will then make a decision regarding season-ending surgery.
Posada spent 32 games on the disabled list earlier this season with right rotator cuff tendinitis. He returned, but remained unable to make routine throws without feeling pain in his shoulder. Backup Jose Molina has started most of the team's games at catcher.
Posada will meet with Dr. David Altchek on Tuesday, and the Yankees will follow the doctor's recommendation regarding surgery. Though Posada will almost undoubtedly undergo an operation on his shoulder, he could postpone it until after the season.
"Jorge is here to do whatever helps us win," manager Joe Girardi said. "That's the type of person he is; that's the type of player he's always been. But until you see a doctor, it's silly to speculate."
